Our story

Shirvington started in 1996 when the family purchased 16 hectares of prime land in Willunga (now known as White’s Valley), South Australia. Willunga is just south of McLaren Vale on the Fleurieu Peninsula, an area internationally renowned for its red wines.

In the winter of 1996 work began on the development of our first vineyard, Redwind, named for its red soil and windy Mediterranean climate. We planted Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot (since replaced with Mataro) vines. In 2019 we replaced one block of Cabernet Sauvignon with Fiano. Our aim was to grow grapes to produce super-premium, honest wines with full fruit flavour, and to build a strong and thriving Australian brand, respected as a leader in quality, consistency and value to the consumer.

We have since established a second vineyard in McLaren Vale, Manjalda, named after Lynne's parents property in NSW. Here we have Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache vines.

Each vintage we keep a small amount of the best fruit for our wines and sell the excess to other quality winemakers.

Sustainable farming practices are used in our vineyards. Each vintage is closely monitored right through to the hand selection of the fruit before harvest. The quality of fruit is such that our first commercial release, the 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon, was awarded Wine of the Year (The Bushing Trophy) at the prestigious 2002 McLaren Vale Wine Show. Subsequent vintages of the Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz have gone on to further accolades nationally and internationally.

We have been a James Halliday 5 star winery since 2015.

In 2017 we started a second label, Row X Row, named because all vineyard work is performed row by row. These wines are fresh and vibrant and ready to drink now. The labels are colourful and the wines are made from a combination of fruit from our Estate and other South Australian growers' vineyards.

Today in 2020, the Shirvington passion for wine involves three generations. Paul and Lynne continue to run the business, Mark manages the vineyards with assistance from Peter Bolte and Kim Jackson produces our beautiful wines with the help of the family every vintage. Mark's wife, Carla, works in administration and has been brilliant in helping with all aspects of the business. Emma-Lee, granddaughter of Paul and Lynne, is the sales and brand manager. Grandson Jake Shirvington helps out in the vineyard and winery when he has spare time.

Vintage 2020 saw us produce the first wine in our new winery at the Manjalda Vineyard and in March 2021 we opened the doors to our new Cellar Door. We hope to welcome you into our space where we can share our story and passion for wine and wine education.

After a quarter of a century in the wine industry we look forward to continuing to produce wine for you and we look to continue getting better with age.
