Winemaker - Kim Jackson

Turning grapes into wine is a science. Making the wine special is an art. We have a consummate artist in Kim Jackson. Kim’s knowledge and influences extend from vintages in the Sonoma Valley in California to Nuits St Georges in Burgundy. Since 2005, she has been using grapes from our Redwind Vineyard as her palette.

"My love of wine came from growing up in a home where wine was always part of the table. Whether it was a quiet family dinner, an after work drink or a cheese platter with friends, wine seemed to be an integral part. I went straight from high school to complete my Oenology degree at Adelaide Uni. I’ve since worked 23 vintages including a couple early on in Sonoma, California and Burgundy, France. My time in France really opened my eyes to the concept of ‘terroir’ and how small batch fermentation can be used to highlight the nuances in individual blocks within vineyards.

I have been very lucky to be part of the Shirvington journey since they started making wine in 2001. Being part of a small, family owned business has so many benefits. I get to play a role in every aspect of the business – whether it’s hand picking grapes for a whole bunch ferment, planting new Fiano vines or sweeping the floor. I love that quality lies at the heart of every decision and if a wine does not meet our strict standards it does not go under our label. We have three generations of Shirvingtons who stand at the tasting bench now and help approve every wine we send to bottle – along with Pete Bolte, the viticulturist, and myself. I’m privileged to be part of a great team.

I was super excited about the new winery that came into play just in time for Vintage 2020. I had the luxury of doing small, half tonne ferments and playing with different techniques – which I could then press off into individual barrels. There are so many possibilities and I can’t wait to see what the future brings!"
